Rubens, Portraits of Princes at Musée du Luxembourg

From October 4th 2017 to January 14th 2018

Pierre Paul Rubens (1577-1640) was a protean genius. His immense work covers almost all subjects of painting. His princely portraits remain little known when they are essential in his career. Painting the portrait of a sovereign is the most prestigious command that a painter can receive at the time, this exercise must notably make it possible to flatter the sensitivity of the model.

While Rubens had received orders from the kings and queens of his time, an exhibition had never yet been devoted to these portraits.

The exhibition is also presented in the palace for which Rubens realized one of his main masterpieces: the Medicis gallery, set of monumental paintings on the life of Marie de Medici, installed in the Richelieu wing of the Louvre Museum.
